YOUTH

Supporting youth to lead the trade union movement of today and workplaces of tomorrow.

Transport unions need young workers to be their driving force now – for their future. The voices of young workers, with the support of unions, need to be at the forefront of the fight for secure and decent work.

ISSUES

The urgency of a just transition to a sustainable economy is an issue that weighs heavily on the minds of young people. Young people are deeply affected by precarious jobs and unemployment, along with climate anxiety, and these challenges are being exacerbated by widening social and economic inequalities since the onset of COVID-19.

With the increasing demand for a flexible workforce, a growing number of young people have part-time, temporary and outsourced contracts that undermine young people’s fundamental rights at work.

Young workers are already overrepresented in precarious work, with the majority of the global youth workforce in informal employment. These young workers are earning low wages in unsafe or exploitative working conditions, and are particularly vulnerable to job losses with inadequate or limited access to social and legal services.

WHAT WE DO

Young workers We know that in unity there is strength, which is why we work to connect and amplify the voices of young transport workers in the trade union movement.

We are supporting young people to utilise their creativity and innovative campaigning skills to take action on the most pressing issues facing them now and into the future.

ITF is building youth networks, developing resources, sharing good practice, and hosting events that bring young workers together.

WHERE WE FOCUS

Youth Structures

Facilitating young workers' engagement into unions’ work and in the decision making process concerning their employment and working conditions.

Youth Employment & Job Security

Advocating for youth employment policies that guarantee high-quality, secure jobs for young workers, address age discrimination at work and ensure young people have access to: quality apprenticeship and employment opportunities, the ability to transition from informal to formal work, adequate earnings, stable and secure work, career paths and skills development.

Young Workers & The Platform Economy

Bringing together a network of ITF affiliates organising food delivery riders and couriers and self organised riders’ groups to address shared concerns including low pay, unfair contracting and deactivations, unsafe working conditions and a lack of social protections.

Technology & Digitalisation

Empowering young workers to use new technology and digital tools to organise and mobilise youth in and outside the union movement. Developing coordinated strategies and campaigns to address technological changes affecting young workers, who may be at greater risk of automation. Analyse the skills gaps introduced by technological changes, training young workers and the role of their unions in protecting their jobs.

Climate Justice & Just Transition

Ensuring sustainable youth employment and jobs are at the core of the climate change agenda by developing strategies that give youth a voice in a just transition.
